Why “Fear-Based” Marketing Works (And Why You should Ignore It)

Recently, a client called me, sounding unsettled. She’d just come out of a meeting with a “skilled salesperson” who wanted her to sign an $800-a-month marketing package.
To prove she “needed” him, he ran a voice search on his phone for local (HER SERVICE BUSINESS HERE). When her business didn’t pop up in the AI’s verbal response, he told her she was essentially invisible.
Despite the fact that her business is thriving, she has a waitlist, and she isn’t looking to expand outside her immediate neighborhood, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was falling behind.
Does that sound familiar? As entrepreneurs, we often feel like we’re “behind the eight ball.” When someone brings up Google algorithms, AI search, or SEO, most of us flinch. It is incredibly easy to convince a small business owner they are losing out because they haven’t mastered marketing or social media. Most small business owners are doing it all and constantly feel under accomplished.
The Truth About AI Search
Here is the secret: AI search (like ChatGPT or Perplexity) isn’t magic. It is just a very fast researcher. It “learns” about the world by reading Google, websites, and social media. If you are already sharing helpful information on your website and social media, the AI will eventually find you. You don’t need a special “AI package”—you just need to keep being helpful online.
Why Google is Still King
While AI is growing, Google is still the heavy hitter, and they are making moves to protect their data. Recently, Google made it much harder for AI bots to “scrape” deep search results.
In short: the web just got a little “shallower” for AI. This means that to be found—by humans or robots—you don’t need to be everywhere. You just need to be in the top tier of quality.
How to Be “Findable “In Google Search Without the $800 Price Tag
Google (and subsequently AI) wants to show people content that is helpful, original, and easy to read. You don’t need a complex “algorithm strategy.” You just need to focus on these three things:
Helpful Content: Does your website actually answer the questions your customers are asking?
Trust (E-E-A-T): Does your site show that you have the experience and expertise to do the job?
User Experience: Is your site fast, safe, and easy to use on a cell phone?
Your “Action Plan” (It’s Simpler Than You Think)
If that still feels like a lot, let’s boil it down to a routine you can actually manage. You don’t need a massive marketing firm; you just need consistency.
Write one helpful post a week: Answer one question a customer asked you that week.
Update your Google Business Profile: Post that same answer there.
Share to Social Media: Let your followers know you’ve solved a problem.
The Bottom Line: There are no shortcuts. An $800-a-month “magic fix” won’t build the long-term trust that original, helpful content will.
If you create the content your customers need, you will be visible. If you wait for a “magic pill” or do nothing, you’re leaving your visibility to chance. You’ve built a great business—now just tell the world (and the search engines) why you’re the expert they’ve been looking for.
If you’re ready to get some clarity on your marketing, send me a message. I’d love to talk.
